Some taxis, not all have their drivers and touts up to something cynical. However, this is activated by the unsuspecting travellers with valuables like smart phones, laptops or even cash in hand bags. If you are a lady trying to get into a taxi and the front seat is not occupied, the conductor will give you an option of taking up that seat.
Seconds later, the driver will feign a reason strong enough for you the passenger at the co-driver's seat to help put the driving mirror right as these are old cars normally so all that is expected. While you are trying to give a helping hand, that action will only stop when he tells you that it's in the right position.
Meanwhile, as you are doing that, the tout is making his way to your handbag or rack sack to find your most expensive, irreplaceable items.
If the above trick is not used on mirrors, then, it will be the door. "Oluji Telunywedde..." meaning that the door is not closed properly. This is a reason so strong to either open and hit it real hard just to ensure all is well. The next time you are in a taxi and the same happens, this should be enough to let you know that a bad situation is developing.
You now know what to do the next time you take up the front seat, be smart.
In the above pic, the driver and his tout had just done a similar trick. The tout took a travellers laptop only to replace it with another object, on getting out of the car the passenger realised his laptop was missing. It was then that he hopped onto a bike and a chase ensued.
Luck was not on their side this time around, the taxi got an accident leaving ther driver stuck right in his seat. Unfortunately, the tout took off with the laptop.
