Toyota Ractis going for close to 19Mshs

Buying of cars online is one thing many are embracing lately most especially when one comes across bargains. The tax man has even made life simpler by adding a tool to their website that gives you an estimate of how much taxes you would be paying for your preferred car.

On the URA website, you find a link to the Motor Vehicle Tax Calculator which redirects you to the computation of taxes on imported vehicles.

We were interested in this Toyota Ractis which is not a common vehicle on Kampala streets now but that won't be the case five years later.

It's CIF to the nearest port which is Mombasa for those in Uganda for example was US$ 2,360. It was manufactured in 2007 making it 9 years old assuming we were to import it in the country this year. The exchange rate for the US dollar [which varies from time to time] was $ 3,389.02.

Once the above fields are entered, the tool then returns with the total tax which in this case was Ugx: 8,398,278/- It should be recalled that before getting to this stage, you must have paid the US$ 2,360 which is approximately 7,960,000/- to the overseas seller who happens to be in Japan at least for the majority of the vehicles in Kampala.

Once the money is received, he then arranges to ship your car to Mombasa, it normally takes about 28 days or there about. During the time of shipping, you can arrange with a clearing and forwarding company to have your car delivered at your door step or better still, get onto one of these buses with free wifi on board to Mombasa and drive back with your new ride, it's fun.

Mbuga and Pemba's BMW X6 recalled by URA

Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has recalled a total of 186 cars to their Nakawa Headquarters before May 31, 2016. The vehicles have to be presented to the Assistant Commissioner Enforcement for verification. Failure to do so, the cars will be impounded on sight and the owners apprehended.

Among the wanted cars are Pemba Sports Africa's maroon BMW X6 and businessman SK Mbuga's black BMW X6. The other customized registration number plate is 'CHEUNE5' owned by Muyanja Derrick Senyonga.

URA re-calls registered motor vehicles

The exercise is to help the authorities to determine if the said cars paid the actual tax and were imported genuinely in the country. The full list of the affected cars can be got off the URA facebook page. The affected cars are in the UAX...UAY series.

Leila Kayondo to feature on Revved Up

Andrew Kabuura, a sports commentator is the host of Revved Up, a motor show on NTV that airs every Wednesday at 8:30pm show casing celebrity rides among others. Rapper Navio, TV host Denzel, Uganda Cranes coach Micho and NTV's Flavia Tumusiime have so far appeared on the past shows.

The celebrity segment has in the past shows featured 2 Rav4's owned by Micho and Flavia, Navio's Merc and Denzel's 3000cc 2 seater white BMW and those yet to be featured are Leila's BMW, Bebe Cool's CLS350 and Hummer probably among others.

The mere fact that RAV4's are ranking top in the very first weeks of the show simply confirms that, it won't be long before there won't be anymore celebrity rides to show, may be that section should be opened up for posh rides around town irrespective of whether they are owned by celebs or not.

Otherwise, after including Mbuga and Katsha's rides, the celebrity segment might soon be exhausted in the infancy stages of the show. It's even not clear if Katsha's rides can hit the road, you are allowed a specific period to have foreign registration plates, short of that, you acquire local registration plates or drive/ship it back to country of origin. Below is Mbuga's BMW X6 whose registration plate has changed to 'SK MBUGA 6'.

Mbuga's BMW X6 now has SK Mbuga 6 reg plates

Car enthusiasts want the show to feature more of the brands that are affordable because that is where the majority fall. In yesterday's show, a Suzuki Ciaz, model 2015 going for Shs83million was recommended but you will be amazed of how many Ugandans out of the 36 million will part with that price for a Sedan car, they are just a handful.

Over 20 cars stolen from the UK were recovered in Kampala.

Stolen London Lexus recovered from Kampala

This Lexus was stolen from West London in April but using a smartphone app, it was discovered in Kampala but the officers were stunned when they discovered 28 more vehicles.

Most of these cars use keyless technology which has enabled criminals using reprogrammed keys to drive off. It takes a thief five seconds to break into a keyless car.

The vehicle that was stolen from West London was tracked to Le Harve in France then shipped to Middle East in Oman before making it's way to Mombasa. The Lexus RX 450h was driven from Mombasa to Kampala.

"This investigation is an excellent example of the close co-operation between the UK National Crime Agency, National Vehicle Intelligence Service, Interpol and APU to tackle the increasing threat from organised vehicle crime."

"Working with the police and security services in Kenya and Uganda, we have been able to dismantle an international criminal network that has been responsible for stealing high-value cars from the UK and exporting them to East Africa," Paul Stanfield, National Crime Agency.

Other cars that were recovered include a Range Rover Evogue, BMW X3, Audis and other prestige makes are in the process of being repatriated.

Tito Tong's Merc with three number plates

Tito Tong is a Ugandan based tycoon from Juba. He is the owner of Mengo based Monalisa Bar, opening up another on Entebbe road in Lweza plus other businesses in and around the city.  He recently got himself on the wrong side of the law when his Merc, the only one in East Africa (according to him) was spotted with two personalized number plates.

It originally had red number plates, he paid Shs 48m in taxes plus Shs 6m for the TITO customized registration plate which is the norm, but the same car was spotted with TONG plates.

The authorities at Nakawa were forced to impound the white merc. In trying to explain, a relative to the tycoon gave her side of the story;

"Get the details from a reliable source. That red number was it's first registered number under Desh then, the TITO plate was registered just last week after paying taxes. The TONG is for a Range Rover not SL."

From the above explanation, it turns out the TONG number plate is for a Range Rover and that it's also being used on the white merc, at least from the pics.

After clearing with the authorities, the tycoon posed with some of the cops to celebrate the moment with this caption; "It has been hectic but finally I'm done with URA on Benz issue kaboom."

The Mercedes SL V12 Biturbo at URA Nakawa offices
The Mercedes Benz SL-v12 Bi-Turbo at the Uganda Revenue Authority offices...

The Merc parked at his home with Tong Plates

Customized number plates are transferable. For example, one customized number plate can be transferred to another car (through URA), but that's not what is happening here. In this case, it's one car having two number plates which is wrong and the more reason it had to end up in Nakawa.

Desh Kananura's Audi Q7 - Pick Up

No doubt, Desh Kananura loves cars more than he loves himself. In the just concluded Vintage car show at Sheraton and the Auto car show at Munyonyo, his Orange Audi Q7, SUV was one of the cars being show cased courtesy of it's rear portion. The rear doors and seats were removed and a pick-up was good to go. It should be noted that this was done from Kampala.

Last Thursday, the orange Audi Q7 was 'flying' along Lugogo Bypass faster than the Mityana small aircraft, only to be spotted hours later in areas around Ndeeba.

"I have just been told that my driver has written off my Q7 Pick up? in some place in Ndeba, does anyone know where I can find the car?" Desh asked his close friends.

It was not long before his close pals got back to him with details. They also told him that the damage was not severe.

"Car has been located in a trench in Ndeba, driver has run away, I hear he hit a boda and ended up in a trench when he opened door, he showed them a clean pair of heals!!!"

It should be recalled that Desh has a case to answer over the bar-tender who died following a beating from Panamera bar owned by Desh, so many were like, this driver had better run or else, he will get a thorough beating for knocking the orange SUV.

I forgave my driver!

"Thanks to everyone my car had been taken to be filled up with fuel, driver turned off the phone went to see a girlfriend in Ndeba trying to speed back, I believe he lost control, the rest are details, I forgave him and he is here with me, and the good news is, he is ok! Thank God he never knocked any one and everything happens for a reason. On to the next thing people."

"Negative energy around me is not accepted," Desh concluded.

He is now thinking of turning one of his two Range Rover Sport's into a pick-up though some are of the view that he drops the idea.

After changing an Audi Q7 to a pick up, Range Rover Sport is next

Desh Kananura bringing in a Bugati Verom

           Desh 4 Bugatti Veyron

Updated - Desh Kananura - "The bugatti you have just seen is real and it has dubai plates but take time and think would you ship such an expensive car.? I would fly it? So it's not true that there is a bugatti in East Africa. As for my Haters! You only push me to the next level and as Americans say any publislity is good publicity. Good or bad. You keep me relevant. Alot has been said about me that is not true but that has never and will never faze me,"

We would have noticed this because he first called it a Bugatti Verom...!

Earlier VersionTycoon Desh Kananura is renowned for his enviable car collection and boasts of a garage including supercars, vintage cars and now the Panamera boss has brought in a Bugatti Veyron, a mid-engined sports car. It's an 8,000 cc litre engine, petrol with a 7-speed transmission. It's designed and developed by the Volkswagen group.

"Bugatti Veyron just landed in Mombasa! Arab money!!! Haters go hate!" Desh noted on his wall while communicating the news. The sports car will be in Kampala on Monday.

It's less than two months when he brought in a Rolls Royce. Back to the Bugatti, only 300 cars have been sold worldwide since inception in 2005.

When not enjoying his other cars that include a Bentley, Maybach or Lincoln among others, the rally driver is often found travelling to Western Uganda using his over 1,000 cc BMW monster bike.

Rally Driver and Panamera bar boss, Desh Kananura is the proud owner of a black Rolls-Royce Phantom, an ultra-luxury saloon automobile made by Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, a BMW subsidiary, in the United Kingdom. It's a 2013 model.

Unlike other tycoons like Ivan Semwanga who have achieved similar success and wealth by driving Lamborghinis on dusty Kampala streets, Desh was spotted in a black rolls-royce. It's the first of its kind in Kampala.

Desh had an inspirational message to those who looked up to him. "Not all is lost C. Saunders, founder of KFC got his break at the age of 60yrs of age. As long as the thing you carry over your shoulders is still working!!! keep fighting, only the strong survive!!! Happy Easter People."

Zari and her new Porsche Cayenne
South African based Ugandan socialite, Zari was in town last week together with hubby and as usual had fun doing what they do best, 'Kulya Kash'. She attended the WARID Woman of Substance awards at Serena Hotel and also graced the Club Rouge 9th Anniversary party.

The couple is fond of spending like there is no tomorrow, but on this particular visit, the spending was on low key prompting rumours that the couple had become broke. Zari laughed this off saying that those who hardly know you say a lot before posting a pic of all her cars  with these words: ''Don't Hate, Be Inspired''

A few hours later, she unleashed a black twin-turbo V8 Porsche Cayenne valued at $48,850 before tax. This has left many in the Gauteng Province in shock with the rate at which she changes cars like strings. ''Went shopping today waiting for my personalized GP plates." Zari confirmed on her wall.

In the last three months, Zari has been making headlines with Ivan's Lamborghini but this time around, she wants ZARI -GP initials on the registration plates for the Cayenne. In one of the reviews for the Cayenne S model, it's far better than a Range Rover Sport. "It gets to 62mph in 5.7seconds, reasonable fuel consumption and the cabin wraps around the driver.

Why buy a car from Japan when you can buy it locally? - This is certainly a question that has been disturbing many given the fact that there are many cars in bonds around Kampala and other nearby places. We will break it down for you after interacting with a number of people engaged in the practice.

It's cheaper - It's cheap because you have bought it otherwise if you buy it and you are to sell it, then you will incorporate your profit margin in the price which has to be met by the final buyer of the car.

Flexible Payment Plans - A car being bought from Japan has two payments. The first one is the person selling you the car and the next one is the tax man. The tax man normally charges at least 70% of the cost as taxes. In the case of the bond, you have to meet three plans, the above two and the profit for the seller.

Fresh Is Good - New cars are costly per say so the majority drive reconditioned vehicles which are 'new' anyway. You are better off getting it straight from Japan so that you own it there and then as opposed to getting it from the bond when some valuable parts have been replaced with very basic ones.

Latest Models - If you are in search of latest models, then the online option could offer better results as opposed to the old models that have over stayed in bonds.

Challenges
However, purchasing of vehicles online has it's challenges. You could land on a website that is not genuine, wire your money and never get your car shipped to Africa. The practice depends on trust because you are sending money to people you have never met and not even sure they exist.

This is the sole reason buying cars locally as opposed to buying online is still popular.

How to buy a car from Japan?
Search for a car of your choice, contact the seller on how how and where to pay, the car will then be shipped to Mombasa or Dar-Es-Salaam. You can get it from Mombasa or your clearing agent can help.
