The founding executive director of Deaf Link Uganda, Barbra Nassozi Kiyaga, has been tragically killed during a gun attack on a lodge located in Kisoro district. The violent incident also left a police officer nursing injuries.

According to Kigezi Region police spokesperson Nelson Tumushime, the attack unfolded at approximately 2:00 am on Thursday at Mucha Lodge along the Mutorere-Nyundo road. Unidentified gunmen allegedly raided the facility in an apparent robbery targeting guests, but encountered resistance from security personnel stationed at the location.

Guards opened fire to deter the intruders, sparking an exchange of gunfire. Kiyaga, a 58-year-old resident of Kampala who had checked in on Wednesday for a four-day stay, was struck and died at the scene. Her remains were subsequently transported to Kisoro Hospital mortuary for a postmortem.

Police Constable Charles Mukesi, deployed to guard the premises, sustained a gunshot wound to his left leg during the exchange. He was promptly rushed to Kisoro Hospital, where medical personnel confirmed he is receiving treatment and remains in stable condition.

Authorities have launched a manhunt to capture the suspects, with security reinforcements deployed throughout the area to ensure the safety of residents and visitors. Police have urged locals to remain calm and share any information that could lead to the arrest of the perpetrators.

This tragedy highlights growing security concerns in Kisoro, a popular tourist destination known for its scenic lakes and gorilla tracking sites. The incident follows other recent violent crimes in the region, including the October shooting of prominent businessman Africano Nteziyaremye and his wife, as well as a thwarted raid on Bweza Lodge. Investigators have not yet determined if the various incidents are linked.
