Rising Food and Fuel Costs Push Kampala Families to the Brink

Household budgets across Kampala are facing unprecedented pressure as the cost of basic food items and fuel continues to climb. Routine grocery shopping has turned into a challenging balancing act for residents trying to provide decent meals on a strict daily allowance.
Consider a typical urban household working with a daily budget of Shs20,000. Purchasing core kitchen essentials quickly depletes these funds. A single litre of cooking oil costs about Shs9,000, a kilogramme of beans runs for around Shs6,000, and rice commands roughly Shs5,000 per kilogramme. Together, these three items alone consume the entire budget, leaving nothing behind for vegetables, cooking fuel, transportation, or other vital household needs.
This ongoing cost of living crisis has ushered in a frustrating new normal. Economic observers note that post-crisis prices rarely return to their previous lows, remaining stubbornly high or dropping only marginally. Experts point out that a hungry population cannot maintain productivity, calling for renewed efforts to strengthen national food security and discourage rural farmers from selling off their entire harvests.
Policy analysts are also urging the Ministry of Finance and the Central Bank to explore targeted, temporary fiscal relief alongside monetary tightening to cushion vulnerable citizens. Without coordinated interventions, maintaining basic nutritional standards will become increasingly out of reach for ordinary families.
