Fifteen years after stepping down from one of the most powerful security offices in Uganda, former Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP) Julius Peter Ocur Odwee has found a new calling in environmental conservation and agriculture.
Now 71, Odwee left the police force in 2011 at the age of 56 after successfully completing two three-year contracts as DIGP. Today, the rigorous demands of maintaining law and order have been replaced by a peaceful routine centered around reading, writing, and nurturing nature.
At his serene home in Acandyang Cell, Western Ward, Dokolo Town Council, in Dokolo District, lush eucalyptus trees form a protective boundary around the compound. Odwee has turned tree planting into a personal mission, using his platform to encourage fellow citizens to actively engage in environmental preservation and adopt climate-smart agricultural practices.
Reflecting on his journey from the upper echelons of the Uganda Police Force to a quiet rural life, the former police chief demonstrates that retirement can be a productive chapter dedicated to giving back to the earth and community.
