Authorities in the Kiira Region have taken a 44-year-old headteacher into custody following allegations that he defiled a 16-year-old Senior Three student. The suspect, who serves as the headteacher of Kiko Primary School in Busede Sub-county, Jinja District, was apprehended after investigations linked him to the incident, which reportedly occurred in October in Buwuma East Village, Butagaya Sub-county.
Kiira Region police spokesperson James Mubi confirmed the arrest and issued a stern warning regarding the victim’s father. According to police, the father is facing potential arrest for allegedly orchestrating negotiations with the suspect’s family to secure financial compensation rather than pursuing formal legal action.
Mr Mubi strongly condemned attempts to use child abuse cases for personal enrichment. He emphasized that a child’s safety, dignity, and access to justice must always take precedence over monetary considerations or family reputations.
Meanwhile, Ms Agnes Nampijja from the Kiira Regional Child and Family Protection Office stated that the suspect will be arraigned in court as soon as investigations conclude. Authorities have linked the teenager to specialized care units, ensuring she receives necessary medical treatment and psychological support to cope with the trauma.
This incident underscores a broader, alarming trend across Uganda where individuals entrusted with the care of children—including parents, guardians, and teachers—are frequently implicated in defilement cases. According to official police statistics, thousands of defilement cases are recorded nationwide annually, highlighting an ongoing crisis in child protection.
