Tororo District is reeling from the aftermath of severe weather conditions that have left hundreds of households counting heavy losses. Continuous heavy rains accompanied by strong winds have swept across the area, destroying homes, farmlands, and critical infrastructure, leaving numerous families displaced and struggling for basic shelter.

The agricultural sector has taken a severe hit, with extensive crop gardens wiped out by the storms. This destruction has heightened food security concerns for families whose livelihoods depend entirely on farming. Tororo District Chairperson John Okea described the scale of the damage as alarming, noting that residents have lost both their primary sources of income and food supplies.

Infrastructure has not been spared either. The local road network has deteriorated significantly after heavy runoff washed away newly laid murram, making key transport routes difficult to navigate. In Tororo Municipality, where the impact has been particularly severe, Mayor Benard Ochieng reported that many residents have had to seek temporary refuge with neighbors and relatives after roofs were ripped off their homes.

Educational institutions have also suffered extensive damage. Rubongi Secondary School was among the hardest hit, losing roofs on its science laboratory, classrooms, the food store, and the kitchen just as students prepare for examinations. Headteacher Isaac Matanda noted that critical learning facilities have been severely compromised. The school’s Board of Governors estimates that nearly Shs300 million is required for repairs, an amount far beyond the institution’s financial capacity.

Additionally, falling trees and heavy winds knocked down power poles and damaged transformers, disrupting electricity supply in various parts of the district. Concluding that the destruction surpasses local capabilities, district leaders have officially appealed to the Office of the Prime Minister for emergency assistance, requesting iron sheets and food relief to prevent prolonged hardship.
