The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) has promised residents across Greater Kampala that all roads and infrastructure damaged during recent pipeline installations will be fully restored. According to the corporation, comprehensive road reinstatement works are officially scheduled to kick off this month as part of the broader infrastructure initiative.
The widespread excavations have previously caused notable disruptions in several communities. However, NWSC has emphasized that restoring affected walkways, verges, and gravel roads forms an integral part of the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area (GKMA) Water Supply Network Project. Some gravel sections where pipe-laying and testing have already concluded have already seen initial repair efforts.
The massive undertaking involves laying 69 kilometers of transmission mains, building new reservoirs in Kanyanya, Kabulengwa, and Mutungo, and establishing booster stations in Kungu and Kabulengwa. These upgrades aim to maximize the utility of the Katosi Water Treatment Plant, which currently distributes only half of its 160-million-litre daily capacity due to network limitations.
Once completed, the expanded infrastructure will significantly boost water reliability across Kira, Kasangati, Namugongo, Gayaza, Matugga, Kawempe, Nansana, Wakiso, and surrounding neighborhoods. The corporation estimates the initiative will extend reliable supply to an extra one million residents and secure water needs up to the year 2040.
While the entire project is slated for full completion by August 2027, certain sections will be commissioned earlier. For example, the Namugongo-to-Kasangati pipeline is projected to go live by January 2027. NWSC has urged the public to remain patient and assured them of close coordination with municipal authorities to restore all affected corridors. Read more details on the Nile Post.
