North Korean officials have strongly rejected accusations that the state orchestrated a record-breaking $6.3 billion cryptocurrency hack targeting the Binance exchange. The massive digital heist has been described by cyber analysts as the largest in history.
The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Secret Service, and various cybersecurity experts previously pointed the finger at Pyongyang. Authorities alleged the attack was executed by state-backed hacking units, specifically pointing to the group known as TraderTraitor or the Lazarus Group.
However, Kim Yo Jong, a high-ranking official and sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, dismissed the allegations as “absurd rhetoric.” In a public statement, she described the claims as a deliberate and sinister attempt by the United States to damage her country’s global image and mislead international public opinion.
International investigators have long accused North Korea of utilizing cyber-crime to sustain its heavily sanctioned economy. Prior to the Binance incident, the same state-linked hacking faction was blamed for a massive $1.5 billion breach involving the Bybit exchange in 2025.
Following the recent Binance breach, the crypto exchange temporarily suspended transactions after a compromised engineer’s laptop allowed unauthorized withdrawals. Although users subsequently withdrew billions in assets upon the platform’s reopening, Binance officials confirmed they are covering the stolen funds and have successfully frozen a significant portion of the impacted assets.
