Makerere University has initiated a thorough review of its security and event management protocols in the wake of a chaotic Freshers’ Ball over the weekend. The institution aims to tighten safety measures after videos surfaced online showing a woman undressing in front of a cheering crowd during the Saturday celebration.
In an official statement released by Dean of Students Dr. Winifred Kabumbuli, the university clarified that the individual involved was a former student rather than a newly admitted freshman. The institution strongly distanced itself from the behavior, emphasizing that it does not condone actions violating the community’s behavioral standards.
The viral footage prompted immediate public backlash, leading the woman’s family and various campus figures to appeal for an end to sharing the explicit media. Beyond the stripping incident, the gathering faced further controversy due to a confrontation involving musician Fik Fameica and student leaders.
In response to the organizational breakdown, Vice Guild President Gracious Kadondi suspended the university’s minister for culture over alleged mismanagement and clashes during the event. Makerere administration reiterated its commitment to restoring dignity and safety at all university-sanctioned gatherings moving forward.
