Jailed British businessman David Greenhalgh has faced another significant legal setback following a decision by the Court of Appeal in Kampala. A three-justice panel dismissed his attempt to recover US$3 million, translating to roughly Shs11 billion, from city socialite Meddie Ssentongo.

The appellate panel, comprising Justices Florence Nakachwa, Eva Luswata, and Stella Alibateese, upheld an earlier ruling by the High Court Commercial Division. That initial decision had rejected the financial claim brought forward by Greenhalgh and his company, Davenshan Development (U) Ltd.

The latest ruling marks a continuing chapter in the protracted legal battle that stems from the dramatic collapse of Greenhalgh’s romance and business association with Shanita Namuyimbwa, widely known as Bad Black, back in 2011.

Back in 2015, High Court Judge Henry Peter Adonyo had dismissed the civil suit citing a lack of proof. This prompted Greenhalgh to launch an appeal, arguing that Ssentongo’s prior criminal conviction should have automatically established civil liability under the legal doctrines of res judicata and collateral estoppel.

However, the Court of Appeal found no merit in overturning the previous lower court findings, leaving the jailed businessman empty-handed in his pursuit of the multi-billion shilling claim.
