A 45-year-old South Sudanese woman has tragically lost her life after being struck by a stray bullet during intense fighting between rival factions of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army-in-Opposition (SPLA-IO). The deadly incident unfolded near the Uganda–South Sudan border in Koboko district.

According to Josephine Angucia, the West Nile regional police spokesperson, the violence erupted in the Mungujayi area just across the border. The victim, identified as Roba Jerina, was hit while on the Ugandan side as the conflict between the opposing rebel groups escalated.

Following the outbreak of violence, four suspected SPLA-IO combatants crossed over into Uganda through the Kuluba border point. Michael Masereka, the Koboko district police commander, confirmed that a Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) foot patrol intercepted and arrested the four individuals. Two of the captured fighters had sustained injuries during the clashes and were subsequently transferred to Koboko Central Police Station.

In response to the spillover of violence, Ugandan security agencies have heightened vigilance and intensified patrols along the Kuluba-Kaya border to maintain local safety and prevent further incursions.

Meanwhile, authorities recently recovered a submachine gun along with 31 rounds of ammunition in Kuluba sub-county. A local resident clearing grass for construction discovered the firearm and promptly alerted security officials. Police have secured the weapon as evidence while investigations continue.
