Uganda is ramping up efforts to secure direct single-origin recognition within China’s rapidly expanding coffee market. This strategic economic push follows a dramatic 224 per cent surge in coffee exports to the Asian giant during the 2025/2026 financial year.
The renewed push was highlighted during a business-matching session in Guiyang City, organized by Uganda’s Consulate General in Guangzhou alongside the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries (MAAIF) and the Guiyang Coffee Industry Association. The event aimed to connect local producers directly with Chinese importers, roasters, and retailers.
Historically, much of Uganda’s coffee reached Chinese consumers through third-party intermediaries, often blended with beans from other countries. As Africa’s top coffee exporter, Uganda is now shifting its strategy to eliminate middlemen, ensuring local farmers receive better revenue and that consumers recognize the distinct flavour profiles of Ugandan specialty beans.
Leading the Ugandan delegation, Consul General Judith Nsababera stressed the country’s unique agricultural advantages. Backed by fertile soils and two annual harvest seasons, Uganda is well-positioned to supply premium Robusta and Arabica coffee to Asia’s growing consumer base.
Chinese trade partners have welcomed the direct engagement. Mr. Lu Yuan, President of the Guiyang Coffee Industry Association, noted that enterprises in Guizhou Province have already imported over 150 tonnes of coffee from Uganda and intend to scale up volumes. Officials from both nations remain optimistic that direct-to-market channels will establish Uganda as a premier household brand in China.
