Security forces have confirmed the arrest of retired Lt. Gen. Peter Elwelu in Soroti City following an extensive manhunt linked to alleged subversive activities. According to military officials, the former senior presidential advisor was wanted over plans to destabilize the Teso sub-region.
Col. Chris Magezi, the Acting Director of Defence Public Information for the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs, announced the development on Monday evening. Authorities disclosed that recent security operations connected to the retired general resulted in the recovery of 15 firearms, military fatigues, and two pickup trucks.
Officials stated that Lt. Gen. Elwelu will be charged and prosecuted in a court of law as joint security teams finalize ongoing investigations. He is currently being held at a secure military facility.
Elwelu remains one of Uganda’s most polarizing military figures. He previously commanded the November 2016 military raid on the Buhikira Palace of Rwenzururu King Charles Wesley Mumbere in Kasese, an operation that drew widespread international and domestic condemnation after more than 100 people lost their lives.
Despite the heavy criticism surrounding the Kasese incident, Elwelu rose through the military ranks, serving as Deputy Chief of Defence Forces and Deputy Commander of Land Forces before transitioning into advisory roles.
