Security forces in the Aswa West region have successfully recovered a sub-machine gun (SMG) that was stolen five months ago following a violent assault on the Officer in Charge of Lalogi Police Station in Omoro District.

The breakthrough came on Sunday, November 1, 2026. A local resident in Barolemo Village, Gulu District, stumbled upon the weapon while clearing bushes at his late father’s property. The alert citizen noticed a white polythene bag buried beneath a tree and quickly notified local authorities.

SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, the police spokesperson for the Aswa West and East regions, confirmed the recovery on Monday. He stated that although the firearm had started to rust, its serial numbers matched the details of the gun robbed in May, and the markings remained clearly legible.

According to police records, the weapon was stolen on May 11, 2026. Two unidentified assailants attacked Assistant Inspector of Police Beatrice Awor at her residence during a heavy downpour, striking her with a heavy metal object before fleeing with her service rifle and 30 rounds of ammunition.

Along with the firearm, officers retrieved two magazines containing a total of 32 rounds of ammunition. Preliminary investigations link the weapon to Daniel Komakech, who was killed during a security operation on June 19 after allegedly attempting to disarm an officer. Komakech was suspected of involvement in a wave of robberies and murders across the Aswa sub-region alongside accomplices Oscar Ojok and Vincent Opiro.

Police suspect that Ojok masterminded the targeted attack on the police commander’s home. The surviving suspects are currently on remand and facing trial before the UPDF General Court Martial as investigations continue.
