The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) is undertaking a major infrastructure expansion to extend reliable water supply to an additional one million people across Greater Kampala. The ambitious project is designed to resolve persistent water shortages by unlocking the full potential of the Katosi Water Treatment Plant.

While the Katosi facility boasts an installed production capacity of 160 million litres per day, existing distribution bottlenecks have restricted the plant to operating at roughly half of that capability. To combat this, the ongoing works involve laying 69 kilometres of transmission mains, constructing storage reservoirs in Kanyanya, Kabulengwa, and Mutungo, and establishing crucial booster stations in Kungu and Kabulengwa. Furthermore, the corporation is upgrading its Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system to better monitor and manage water flow.

The massive upgrade aims to benefit residents in Kira, Kasangati, Namugongo, Buwaate, Bulindo, Mulawa, Gayaza, Matugga, Kawempe, Nansana, and Wakiso. Early relief is in sight for some neighborhoods, with the Namugongo-Kasangati pipeline slated for commissioning in January 2027, ahead of the project’s overall completion date in August 2027. Additionally, the network is engineered to accommodate surging urban demand through the year 2040.

Addressing concerns regarding infrastructure disruptions, NWSC has assured residents that road and pathway restoration is fully integrated into the project contracts. Contractors have been instructed to reinstate all affected access routes and verges to their original condition or better. The corporation is closely coordinating with municipal authorities and the Ministry of Works and Transport to minimize public inconvenience as Greater Kampala steps into a more secure water future.
