The Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, has paid glowing tribute to the late Sheikh Abdul-Qadir Mbogo, remembering him as a dedicated Islamic scholar, exemplary leader, and respected elder. The remembrance took place during memorial prayers organized by the grieving family at their residence in Kiwanga, Mukono District.
Delivering the Mufti’s message, Deputy Mufti Sheikh Muhammad Ali Waiswa described the late cleric as a man defined by faith, humility, and unwavering commitment. Sheikh Mbogo’s religious journey included serving as the long-serving Kampala District Kadhi and an Imam at Gaddafi National Mosque until his retirement around 2015.
Tracing his extensive background, the Deputy Mufti noted that Sheikh Mbogo was a true pioneer. As early as the 1950s, he became one of the first Muslim scholars to broadcast Islamic teachings and deliver Friday sermons on Radio Uganda. His early media presence significantly aided the propagation of Islam across the country.
During the gathering, religious leaders also emphasized the need to safeguard the history of Islam in Uganda. UMSC Secretary General Hajji Abbas Muluubya Ssekyanzi urged higher institutions of learning to document the country’s rich Islamic heritage, warning that the vital contributions of figures like Sheikh Mbogo risk being forgotten without proper record-keeping.
Family representatives, including Sheikh Jowadi Mbogo and Sadat Mbogo, remembered their father as a compassionate leader who maintained warm ties with people from all backgrounds. Dignitaries, government representatives, and fellow clerics gathered in large numbers to celebrate a life defined by decades of selfless service.
