Security agencies in Luweero District launched a sweeping joint operation that resulted in the arrest of 66 suspected criminals. The pre-dawn sweep, which lasted from midnight until 5:00 a.m. in Busika Town Council, targeted the villages of Kalibongo, Vumba, and Kibanyi.

The coordinated raid involved the Uganda Police Force, the Uganda People’s Defence Force, and the Internal Security Organisation, alongside local residents. Among those detained were 56 men and 10 women, some of whom were reportedly found in possession of narcotic drugs such as marijuana and opium.

According to police authorities, the crackdown was prompted by intelligence reports and community tip-offs. Investigators believe the targeted areas served as safe havens and operational bases for criminal networks planning burglaries, thefts, and illicit drug distribution across the district.

Savannah Regional Police Spokesperson Sam Twiineamazima stated that security teams are currently screening the detainees to establish direct links to specific crimes. Individuals found culpable will be formally charged and presented in court. Twiineamazima emphasized that similar intelligence-driven operations will continue across the district to ensure public safety, particularly ahead of the festive season.

The crackdown follows alarming figures from the Uganda Police Force Annual Crime Report 2025, which identified Luweero as a major crime hotspot nationwide. Despite a general 10.2 percent drop in national crime figures, Luweero recorded 3,123 cases—the highest total for any district in the country. Authorities have resolved to maintain pressure on criminal elements through strengthened community policing and heightened vigilance.
