Testimony in the ongoing treason trial against veteran opposition politician Dr Kizza Besigye and his co-accused has taken a dramatic turn. A key police investigator has admitted in court that detectives handling the high-profile case failed to visit any of the alleged crime scenes situated abroad.
Appearing before High Court Judge Emmanuel Baguma, Detective Inspector of Police Benedict Odyek faced rigorous cross-examination from defence lawyer Farouk Kizito Kamulegeya. During the session, Odyek conceded that neither he nor his investigative colleagues travelled to Switzerland, Brussels, or Nairobi in Kenya, despite these locations being central to the prosecution’s narrative regarding alleged subversive meetings.
In addition to the physical oversight regarding the international locations, Odyek also acknowledged discrepancies concerning electronic evidence. He admitted that investigators extracted and analysed the contents of certain electronic gadgets that were not explicitly covered by the written search authorisation he had initially secured from the court.
The treason case involves Dr Besigye alongside co-accused individuals including Obeid Lutale and Denis Oola. The prosecution alleges that the accused participated in meetings aimed at overthrowing the government, with recordings purportedly capturing discussions held in cities such as Geneva, Athens, and Nairobi.
The trial has seen several contentious moments, including debates over electronic file dates and testimony from other state witnesses. Defence teams continue to scrutinise the thoroughness and procedural legality of the police investigations as proceedings advance at the High Court.
