Formula 1 star Lewis Hamilton has stated that Ferrari “have to have some serious talks behind closed doors” following a dramatic internal clash at the Mexico City Grand Prix. According to Hamilton, aggressive battling between him and teammate Charles Leclerc ultimately cost the Italian constructor a likely race victory and a secure one-two finish.
The trouble began on the opening lap when Leclerc cut a chicane to seize the lead from Hamilton. The maneuver also allowed Max Verstappen to slip past Hamilton into second place. Verstappen ultimately secured the race win, with Hamilton finishing second and Kimi Antonelli taking third to claim a historic world championship milestone.
Hamilton expressed deep frustration over team radio during a red-flag period, declaring that Ferrari faced massive problems. Speaking after the race, the British champion argued that holding their positions on the first lap would have allowed them to control the race comfortably. Instead, he felt Leclerc’s approach was unnecessary and damaged the team’s overarching goals.
Leclerc defended his actions, explaining that neither driver made the corner cleanly and that fighting for position is part of racing when a win is on the line. However, Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur admitted he was left heavily frustrated by the incident, noting the emotional toll it takes on the thousands of employees working behind the scenes.
The tension in Mexico follows a series of friction points between the two Ferrari drivers throughout the season, including disputes over team orders and positioning in previous races. Verstappen acknowledged that the internal duel played directly into his hands, allowing him to capitalize on their lost pace and secure the victory.
