The Ministry of State for Health has raised serious concerns regarding security and surveillance vulnerabilities at Kamuli General Hospital. During an official inspection tour, Minister of State for Health in charge of General Duties, Anifa Bangirana Kawooya, scrutinized the facility’s medicine store and identified critical gaps in its monitoring infrastructure.
According to the minister, the primary issue lies in the limited storage capacity of the hospital’s CCTV surveillance system. Because the system cannot retain recorded footage for an adequate duration, authorities face significant hurdles in monitoring the handling and movement of pharmaceuticals and essential medical supplies.
Minister Kawooya stressed that robust security and accountability frameworks are non-negotiable when it comes to safeguarding public health resources. She noted that weak surveillance directly undermines transparency, leaving vital medical stores vulnerable to mismanagement or pilferage.
Beyond inspecting the medicine storage facilities, Kawooya took time to engage directly with patients at the Outpatient Department (OPD). This interaction allowed her to evaluate the current standard of healthcare delivery and listen firsthand to the challenges faced by everyday citizens seeking medical attention at the hospital.
The ministerial visit also included an interactive session with student interns from the Lubega School of Nursing and the Gomba School of Nursing. Kawooya encouraged the trainees to uphold high standards of professionalism and focus on delivering quality patient care as they prepare to officially join Uganda’s active healthcare workforce.
Overall, the inspection underscored the government’s renewed focus on patient welfare, improved working environments for medical personnel, and stringent resource accountability across public health institutions.
