Iganga District is in deep mourning following the death of Olivia Kabaale Kwagala, a former Woman Member of Parliament who served from 2011 to 2016. Popularly known as “Muliro Mulenge,” Kwagala passed away on Monday at Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala, where she had been receiving medical treatment for several months.
Kwagala rose to national prominence after securing her parliamentary seat in 2011 by defeating the then Minister in charge of the Luweero Triangle, Beatrice Zirabamuzaale Magoola. Throughout her political career and beyond, she earned a reputation as a dedicated public servant.
Former Iganga District LC5 Chairman Ezra Gabula remembered the late leader as a visionary who heavily prioritized local development. During her legislative tenure, she successfully lobbied for numerous clean water projects and championed unity among leaders across the Busoga sub-region.
Even after her time in Parliament came to an end, Kwagala’s dedication to her community never waned. Former LC5 Chairman Patrick Kayemba noted that she continued championing local causes, using her subsequent role at Umeme to help communities access electricity. She also maintained a personal commitment to empowering youth by funding educational bursaries for underprivileged children in Iganga.
Local leaders, including Iganga District NRM Chairman Abubakar Walubi, have expressed profound sorrow over her passing, highlighting her private business investments that brought vital services closer to residents. Read more about this story in the Daily Monitor.
