Uganda is transforming its vocational education landscape by introducing accessible artisan training pathways tailored for Primary Seven leavers and experienced informal workers. Under ongoing reforms driven by the Uganda Vocational and Technical Assessment Board (UVTAB), the educational framework aims to align technical training closely with current labor market demands.
According to Peter Oyo, a Principal Curriculum Specialist at UVTAB, the Level 2 artisan programme welcomes students after Primary Seven for a structured three-year journey. Meanwhile, individuals who have already acquired practical skills can secure formal recognition and certification through a Recognition of Prior Learning pathway.
To ensure programs match employer expectations, UVTAB recently engaged roughly 160 trainers, industry players, and employers during a two-week consultative workshop. The curriculum updates span vital sectors including technology, business, and home science. Alongside technical skills, the revised syllabi place strong emphasis on workplace ethics, professional integrity, teamwork, and environmental responsibility.
Stakeholders noted that incorporating core values and considerations for special needs learners will produce well-rounded graduates capable of meeting the dynamic expectations of employers. The draft curricula will soon undergo validation by Sector Skills Expert Committees before final approval.
