A United States judge has officially dismissed President Donald Trump’s massive $10bn (£7.4bn) defamation lawsuit against The Wall Street Journal’s parent company, Dow Jones, and media executive Rupert Murdoch. The legal battle stemmed from a publication regarding a 2003 birthday book for the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The controversial report detailed a letter allegedly written by Trump to Epstein before Epstein faced any sex crime charges. The disputed letter featured suggestive language alongside a hand-drawn outline of a woman’s body and ended with remarks about wonderful secrets. Trump vehemently denied authoring or signing the letter, contending that the media outlet fabricated the story and slandered his reputation.

Initially, Trump’s legal team filed a $20bn lawsuit. After that was dismissed, they refiled seeking $10bn in damages. However, Judge Darrin Gayles ultimately threw out the case “with prejudice,” meaning the legal action cannot be brought forward again. In a comprehensive 20-page ruling, Judge Gayles criticized the lawsuit as “grasping at straws” and declared that it ran contrary to the First Amendment, which safeguards freedom of the press.

Judge Gayles noted that Trump’s camp failed to establish “actual malice,” a demanding legal threshold requiring proof that publishers knew information was false or displayed reckless disregard for the truth. The judge emphasized that a public figure’s mere denial does not invalidate a thorough journalistic investigation, warning that accepting such logic would prevent the press from reporting negative stories.
