A federal judge has stepped in to stop the Trump administration from threatening local and state election officials with criminal prosecution over their handling of ballots. The ruling comes just days before critical midterm elections that will decide the balance of power in Congress.
The legal showdown began after the Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security targeted election administrators in states like California and Washington. Armed officials delivered letters and issued grand jury subpoenas, demanding that officials sequester thousands of ballots belonging to registered voters whom the administration alleged might be non-citizens.
Local officials argued they could not comply with the demands because doing so would violate established state and federal election laws. Civil rights groups and union representatives subsequently filed legal challenges, asserting that the federal actions constituted unlawful interference in the administration of elections.
Judge Trina Thompson ruled in favor of the plaintiffs, stating that the government’s tactics would cause chaos and disenfranchise lawful voters under the guise of fighting election fraud. The administration’s actions are part of a broader, long-standing campaign by President Trump to challenge alleged non-citizen voting, even though numerous studies indicate that such occurrences are exceptionally rare.
Following the decision, President Trump criticized the ruling on social media, questioning why efforts to prevent alleged election fraud were being blocked. Despite the pushback, the federal injunction remains in place to protect election workers as they prepare for the upcoming vote.
