Legal professionals in Uganda have been strongly advised to integrate modern technology and artificial intelligence into their practices or risk being left behind in a rapidly evolving professional landscape.
Speaking in Kampala during the launch of the PM Law AI tool, Court of Appeal Justice Geoffrey Kiryabwire emphasized that digital transformation is no longer optional for practitioners aiming to boost productivity and service delivery. He noted that technology serves as an enabler rather than a replacement for human expertise.
“Computers are not going to replace lawyers. Lawyers who use computers effectively will replace those who do not,” Justice Kiryabwire remarked during the event.
The newly introduced PM Law AI platform is designed specifically for Uganda’s legal jurisprudence. Developed by Agentic AI, the chatbot operates via WhatsApp, offering a familiar and accessible interface for advocates navigating complex local laws that general global AI systems often misunderstand.
Dr. Paul Mukiibi, team leader of the PM Law Digital Hub, highlighted how the innovation shifts the paradigm of traditional legal research. Rather than relying solely on physical library archives, practitioners can now leverage internet-connected devices to access accurate statutory frameworks and binding judicial precedents from anywhere.
According to Dr. Mukiibi, the tool has been engineered specifically to prevent the hallucinations common in generic AI models, ensuring that users receive reliable answers grounded directly in Ugandan case law and legislation.
Mr. Anthony Asiimwe, Vice President of the Uganda Law Society, welcomed the development, noting that embedding intelligent automation into daily workflows will significantly reduce research time and ultimately enhance access to justice across the country.
