As momentum builds toward the upcoming Uganda Innovation Week, stakeholders within the technology and entrepreneurship ecosystem are calling for immediate action regarding startup financing. While government officials maintain that comprehensive startup policies are currently in the pipeline, young innovators continue to face significant financial hurdles that threaten their growth and sustainability.

Mr. Teddy Ruge, the chairperson of the Uganda Innovation Week planning committee, recently emphasized that innovation and technology should be understood simply as solutions to everyday problems. However, turning these solutions into viable enterprises requires robust financial backing, an area where Uganda currently lags behind regional neighbors.

According to UNDP reports, Kenya remains the dominant force in East Africa for attracting startup and venture capital financing, having raised between $1 billion and $2 billion over the past two years. In contrast, Uganda’s fledgling ecosystem lacks a formalized startup policy framework, leaving many young creators searching for capital to scale their operations.

This funding gap is particularly alarming in light of Uganda’s pressing youth unemployment crisis. Data indicates that approximately 4 million young Ugandans aged 15 to 24 are currently not in employment, education, or training (NEET), with overall youth unemployment standing at 16.1 percent. Experts argue that fostering tech-driven entrepreneurship is crucial to absorbing this demographic and achieving the nation’s ambitious economic growth targets.

Rather than waiting passively for official policy rollouts, ecosystem players are stepping up collaboration efforts. Innovation exhibitions and networking events are increasingly being leveraged to bridge the gap between creators and potential investors, highlighting the sector’s immense potential to create jobs and drive digital transformation.
