His Royal Highness Eng Dr Michael Moses Odongo Okune marks two years since his official gazettement as the Won Nyaci (Paramount Chief) of Lango. This milestone highlights a tenure shaped by intense legal hurdles, strategic diplomatic engagements with the central government, and a dedicated push to uplift one of Uganda’s economically vulnerable sub-regions.

Over the past two years, the Paramount Chief has focused heavily on socio-economic transformation, rallying the global Lango diaspora to channel investments back home to combat poverty and improve local social services. Recognizing the power of community mobilization, the cultural institution has also revived traditional methods of communication, utilizing songs, drama, and cultural performances to address pressing societal challenges.

In the realm of sports and education, initiatives like the annual Won Nyaci Cup—highlighted by Education and Sports Minister George Ojwang Opota—have proven instrumental in identifying and nurturing young athletic talent across the Lango sub-region. Furthermore, administrative structures have been strengthened with the appointment of a new cabinet and specialized committees designed to streamline leadership under the Owitong.

Despite these developmental strides, the cultural institution continues to navigate internal friction and political complexities. Factional disputes, debates over public appointments, and rival claims to leadership underscore the ongoing challenges of unifying the cultural landscape. Nonetheless, the administration remains focused on its reform agenda as it looks toward the future.
