What began as peaceful demonstrations organized by youth groups in Germany quickly escalated into violent clashes over the weekend, resulting in widespread shop looting and numerous arrests in major urban centers.
Thousands of people had initially taken to the streets in cities like Frankfurt, Berlin, Cologne, and Hamburg. The protests were coordinated by the campaign group Gen Z regelt, translating to “Gen Z takes charge.” Participants marched to voice their anger over the high cost of living, school underfunding, public spending cuts, and compulsory military service.
However, as night fell, the nature of the demonstrations shifted dramatically. Authorities reported that groups of extremists infiltrated the crowds, leading to chaotic scenes in central Frankfurt where shop windows were smashed, trainers and other merchandise were stolen, and molotov cocktails were hurled at emergency services. Police responded by deploying water cannons and special units to clear affected areas.
Similar unrest was reported across the country. In Cologne, officers faced a barrage of bottles and projectiles near the main train station. In Berlin, dozens of police officers sustained injuries during evening confrontations, while Hamburg police made numerous arrests after protesters set fire to barricades and launched fireworks.
German officials strongly condemned the violence, calling for severe punishments for those involved in the rioting and looting. Hessian Interior Minister Roman Poseck stated that left-wing extremists had hijacked what was meant to be a peaceful youth movement. The disturbances in Germany coincided with similar youth-led protests across other European nations, including France, Italy, and Portugal, all grappling with mounting economic pressures and public service challenges.
