The Ugandan entertainment industry is in mourning following the death of popular comedian Yokana Mbuuse, widely known by his stage name Kapere Lufotose. His passing was announced on Sunday evening by National Unity Platform (NUP) party President Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, on his official social media channels.
A close family member disclosed that the comedian was rushed to a hospital after complaining of a severe headache shortly before his death. Although specific details regarding the exact cause of death were not immediately provided, leaders and fans have flooded social media with heartfelt tributes.
Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Joel Ssenyonyi, expressed profound shock, recalling that he had just met with Kapere at the NUP offices in Kavule only a week prior. Colleagues and political figures remembered Kapere not only for the infectious laughter he brought to millions of homes, but also as a passionate advocate for human rights and the rule of law.
Kapere rose to national prominence as a central figure in the Amarula Family comedy group alongside Allan Mujuni and Nicholas Mpiirwe. Standing five feet three inches tall, he famously embraced his unconventional appearance and turned it into his greatest asset. In a past interview, he candidly noted that his looks opened countless doors and built his career.
His journey into comedy began entirely by chance in Nakulabye when a driver told him his face was “worth gold” and directed him to Amooti. His breakout satirical skit, Lufotose, cemented his status as a household name. Burial arrangements are expected to be announced soon.
