The United Nations Security Council is conducting its seventh straw poll to evaluate contenders for the next Secretary-General, in accordance with Article 97 of the UN Charter.
This latest informal ballot introduces a fresh dynamic to the race. The United Arab Emirates recently nominated Lana Zaki Nusseibeh for the position, a development occurring just ten days after Senegal’s Macky Sall officially withdrew his candidacy.
With these shifts, the field features a diverse group of remaining contenders. Alongside the newly nominated Nusseibeh, the candidates include Uganda’s Olara Otunnu, Ivonne A-Baki and María Fernanda Espinosa Garcés from Ecuador, Rafael Mariano Grossi of Argentina, Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett representing Guyana, and Rebeca Grynspan Mayufis from Costa Rica.
Straw polls serve as crucial informal indicators designed to gauge the viability of each candidate before the Security Council moves toward a formal recommendation. This formal step will eventually be finalized through a resolution adopted during a private meeting of the Council. Representatives from Latvia and the United Kingdom have been appointed to act as tellers for the session.
For Olara Otunnu, who stands as the sole remaining candidate from the African continent, the results of this seventh straw poll offer a critical indicator regarding the trajectory and future momentum of his campaign.
