Ugandan table tennis prodigies Joseph Sebatindira and Jemimah Nakawala are carrying the nation’s hopes into the Dakar 2026 Summer Youth Olympics in Senegal. However, their long-time coach, Alvin Katumba, has cautioned that securing a podium finish will be an immense challenge against the world’s elite youth competitors.
Katumba, who has nurtured both players since childhood at the Nakasero Table Tennis Club, noted that the global tournament features top-tier talent from powerhouse nations like China, Japan, and Colombia. Among the formidable opponents are Japanese players Kawakami Ryuusei and Matsushima Miku, the reigning boys’ and girls’ Under-17 World Number Ones, alongside high-ranking Chinese prospects.
Despite the daunting lineup, the Ugandan youngsters boast impressive credentials. Sebatindira recently defended his ITTF World Hopes title in Sheffield, while Nakawala has secured continental titles and played a pivotal role in Uganda’s qualification for the ITTF World Championships.
Preparation hurdles also affected the squad, as Nakawala was delayed in traveling until Thursday due to her final Ordinary Level examinations at Kibuli SS. Katumba admitted that a finish in the quarterfinals would be a respectable achievement given the limited preparation time and the fierce competition.
