A recent eviction exercise targeting railway land in Bbuye Kikumbi, Mityana Municipality, has left slaughterhouse operators and local residents struggling to pick up the pieces. The operation, which commenced in the morning under the supervision of security personnel and railway authorities, was designed to clear illegal occupants off the railway reserve to restore the land for public infrastructure development.

However, the sudden nature of the clearance has drawn sharp criticism from affected meat traders. Many argued that they were caught completely off guard, receiving insufficient time to relocate their businesses or find alternative accommodation. Several traders noted that they had continuously paid municipal taxes yet received no prior guidance or support regarding where they could safely resume operations.

Abdul Kabuni, a slaughterhouse tenderer, emphasized that the business community supports the broader push for development but urgently needs assistance from local leaders. The closure of the facility has effectively cut off the daily income for numerous families who depend on the slaughterhouse for survival. Alongside the business owners, several residents lost their homes in the sweep and are now grappling with sudden displacement.

Mityana District Chairperson Joseph Luzige admitted that the local government did not anticipate the timing of the eviction. He pledged that the district would engage with stakeholders to explore possible interventions and help the displaced operators. Meanwhile, SSP Ahmed Kimenya Seguya, who is spearheading the operation, maintained a firm stance, warning that the clearance would press forward until all unauthorized occupants have completely vacated the railway reserve.
