The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) has announced an immediate overhaul of its nationwide mobilization machinery, halting all paper-based signature drives in favor of a digital registration platform. The strategic adjustment comes as political debates surrounding presidential succession gain momentum within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
According to a directive issued by PLU General Secretary Twalla Fadil, the transition to online platforms originates directly from the movement’s chairman, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who currently serves as Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces (CDF). Fadil noted that all endorsements for Gen Muhoozi will now be conducted strictly through the organization’s official website to professionalize supporter tracking and cadre identification.
To assist supporters without internet access, the movement plans to establish dedicated regional and district operational hubs. Field coordinators currently holding physical endorsement books have until November 30, 2026, to return the materials to the Kampala secretariat for a final audit. Gen Muhoozi also took to social media to characterize the PLU as an influential pressure group within the broader NRM structure, comparing its ideological stance to internal factions in global politics.
The administrative restructuring follows recent discussions within the NRM Central Executive Committee, where President Yoweri Museveni presented a strategic paper addressing future national leadership qualities. While some party members interpreted the discourse as a green light for Gen Muhoozi’s political future, civic society actors and opposition figures continue to voice concerns regarding constitutional compliance, pointing out that serving military officers are restricted from engaging in active partisan politics.
Despite the legal and political scrutiny, PLU leadership insists that the organization will push forward with its countrywide expansion, incorporating public interest programs such as community barazas, anti-corruption campaigns, and medical camps into its grassroots rollout.
