Congregants and clergy at St Andrew’s Cathedral in Mbale erupted in joy following the announcement of the Reverend Canon Eridad Milton Shissa as the ninth Bishop of the Mbale Diocese. The election was officially conducted by the Church of Uganda House of Bishops during a meeting at the Syamalede Archdeaconry headquarters in Busia District, Bukedi Diocese.
Upon hearing the news, faithful believers broke out into songs of praise, dancing, and ululation inside the cathedral. Local Christians expressed deep gratitude, noting that the selection opens a promising new chapter for the local church community after overcoming various past challenges.
Born in Bududa District in September 1968, Bishop-elect Shissa brings a wealth of academic and pastoral experience to his new office. He holds a Bachelor of Divinity from Bishop Tucker Theological College, a Postgraduate Diploma in Education from Makerere University, and a Master’s Degree in Counselling Psychology from Uganda Christian University. Having been ordained in 1996 and married to Beatrice Sarah Shissa, he has long served the church, most recently as the Sub-Dean of St Andrew’s Cathedral.
Following his surprise appointment, Shissa outlined his vision for the diocese, emphasizing a commitment to building upon the foundations laid by his predecessors. He specifically aims to utilize his background in counseling to focus on strengthening family units, supporting young people, and guiding couples through contemporary social challenges.
Plans are underway for his formal consecration and enthronement, which is scheduled to take place on January 24, 2027, at St Andrew’s Cathedral, where he will succeed Bishop John Wilson Nandaah.
