Health authorities in Masaka City have expressed deep concern after new statistics revealed that the area’s HIV prevalence rate has climbed to 12.2 percent. This figure stands at more than double Uganda’s national prevalence rate of 5.9 percent, posing a significant threat to local development and the country’s vision of ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.
According to Masaka City Health Officer Dr Patrick Kasendwa, individuals between the ages of 20 and 39 account for 72 percent of all newly identified HIV cases. Because this demographic represents the most economically productive segment of the population, the rising infection rate directly endangers local workforce stability and broader economic growth.
To combat the crisis, health organizations and local authorities recently held community awareness runs ahead of World AIDS Day. Dr Cecilia Natembo of Uganda Cares noted that while prevention campaigns have been stepped up, some community members continue to ignore safety messages or remain reluctant to test for the virus. Investigations show that sexual contact continues to be the primary transmission route for newly diagnosed patients.
Adding to the challenge, financial constraints are threatening the sustainability of local response programs. Dr Kakumba Kizitto, Programmes Manager at the TASO Masaka Centre of Excellence, warned that reductions in external funding could undermine critical prevention, treatment, and support services.
Health experts are urging residents to prioritize regular testing, know their status, and practice safe behaviors. Officials emphasize that collective community action and sustained vigilance are essential to reversing these worrying trends.
