A growing waste management crisis in Masaka City has sparked a public fallout among local leaders following the impounding of government vehicles during a recent National Cleaning Day exercise. The confrontation highlights deep-seated divisions over how sanitation services are handled across the urban center.

The disagreement centers on Nyendo-Mukungwe Division Mayor Ronald Kasekende and Resident City Commissioner (RCC) Ahmed Washaki. Tensions boiled over after vehicles reportedly utilized by the division for waste collection were impounded and taken to the police under the directives of the RCC.

Mayor Kasekende slammed the move, arguing that it severely hampers ongoing cleaning efforts. According to the mayor, the division faces a severe shortage of trucks, currently depending on a single garbage collection vehicle borrowed from Mbarara City. He appealed for the immediate release of the impounded units to prevent trash from piling up in residential neighborhoods and along major roads.

In response, RCC Washaki defended his actions, stating that the vehicles will remain held until pressing accountability concerns regarding sanitation are resolved. Washaki criticized local officials for neglecting their duties, pointing out that garbage often sits unattended for days despite private contractors being hired to manage disposal.

Washaki further warned that unauthorized use of government vehicles will not be tolerated. He emphasized that any official machinery found handling garbage without proper clearance will face similar enforcement measures.

The leadership standoff comes as heaps of uncollected refuse continue to dot various parts of the city, stoking worries among residents over public health risks. Nyendo-Mukungwe Division Town Clerk Umar Luttalo also acknowledged the severe operational hurdles currently hindering effective waste management.

Despite the friction, the National Cleaning Day initiative moved forward with active participation from local residents and motorists. Observers note that resolving the ongoing leadership feud will be crucial to establishing a dependable sanitation framework for Masaka City.
