Tragedy struck Lwengo District after a 24-year-old resident, John Sserugo, was found dead inside his residence. The grim discovery came to light when neighbors noticed a foul smell emanating from the house and decided to force the door open, finding his body already in a state of decomposition.

According to village chairperson Richard Lubambula, the condition of the remains suggested Sserugo had passed away roughly two days prior to the discovery. Sserugo’s mother, Fausta Nammande, expressed deep devastation, noting that she had recently spoken with him when he shared the joyful news that he had secured a new job.

Community members described the deceased as a peaceful individual with no known conflicts. However, some locals noted that he consumed alcohol heavily while eating very little, sparking speculation regarding his lifestyle habits, though the official cause of death remains unconfirmed. Local leaders have used the incident to urge moderation in alcohol consumption and to call for stronger community bonds.

Local leaders, including District Chairperson Hajji Abasi Kizito, encouraged residents to maintain close relationships with neighbors and regularly check on one another’s welfare to prevent similar tragedies. Additionally, leaders raised broader security concerns in the area, pointing to other challenges such as livestock theft, gambling, and recent criminal cases.

Greater Masaka Regional Police have launched an official inquiry into the incident. The deceased’s body was transported to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital for a post-mortem examination as authorities work to uncover the exact cause of death.
