Local authorities in Kabale District have expressed disappointment after a majority of residents shunned the latest National Cleaning Day exercise. The government previously designated the last Saturday of every month—from 7:00 am to 10:00 am—as a mandatory period for public sanitation, aimed at clearing litter, unblocking drainage channels, and cleaning shared spaces.
During the fourth edition, only a handful of locals joined security personnel, the UPDF, and the Kabale Municipality Central Division enforcement team to clean areas like the central market and regional referral hospital. Many residents remained indoors or attempted to carry on with their normal business activities, prompting security teams to intercept travelers along major routes.
Kabale Deputy Resident District Commissioner Michael Muramira Kyakashari criticized the low turnout, emphasizing that maintaining a clean environment should be a voluntary community duty rather than something requiring constant official mobilization. Because of the lukewarm response, Kyakashari warned that authorities will implement much stricter rules and business restrictions during the upcoming fifth edition in November.
Meanwhile, local leaders like Hospital Cell Chairperson Betty Kyomuhendo pointed out that some residents face logistical hurdles. She appealed to the government to supply essential tools such as spades, pangas, gloves, and dustbins to encourage broader community participation in future exercises.
