The Ugandan government has officially initiated an electronic waste management campaign in Lira City, naming the area among the pilot urban councils to implement a dedicated system for separating discarded electronics from routine municipal garbage.
The launch took place during the country’s fourth National Cleaning Day celebrations. The initiative aims to foster responsible disposal habits, encourage recycling, and transform unwanted materials into practical commodities.
Health Minister Chris Baryomunsi, speaking on behalf of the Prime Minister, urged community members to sort their refuse at the source by keeping electronic items away from organic debris, plastics, and grass.
Dr Baryomunsi noted that the administration is progressing with plans to convert gathered waste into valuable products, such as fertilizers and recycled plastics, through localized value addition.
Lira City Mayor Sam Atul explained that the local authority will collaborate closely with Lira University and the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance to roll out the framework successfully.
Meanwhile, officials underscored the vital link between environmental hygiene and economic vitality. Tadeo Atuhura of the Microfinance Support Centre pointed out that clean business environments safeguard entrepreneurs from losing savings to preventable medical expenses.
Government Chief Whip Dr Jane Ruth Aceng also reminded residents to maintain high standards of hygiene as Lira prepares to welcome visitors for upcoming continental football events at Akii-Bua Stadium ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
