Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has ordered the immediate release of retired Brig Gen Charles Bakahumura, the former director of the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI). Gen Muhoozi announced the decision on his official X handle, indicating a strategic shift toward healing past divisions within the top ranks of the armed forces.

Brig Gen Bakahumura had been detained alongside former military intelligence chief Maj Gen Abel Kandiho as part of an extensive military inquiry into alleged treachery and false intelligence. The retired officers were taken into custody just weeks after officially retiring during a State House ceremony.

The high-level security crackdown followed viral videos of retired generals celebrating their retirement at State House Entebbe. The public displays drew sharp criticism from the military commander, who questioned the officers’ conduct and launched investigations into several high-ranking figures.

Bakahumura served as the head of CMI from 2012 to 2017 before spending seven years as the Chief of Logistics and Engineering, making him the longest-serving chief in that role. While Bakahumura has now been ordered free, other high-ranking officers, including former DIS chief Maj Gen James Birungi and Lt Col Ephraim Byaruhanga, have faced formal charges of treachery before the General Court Martial.
