A mother in Kasengejje, Wakiso Town Council, is living in profound fear after reporting her husband for the alleged repeated defilement of their five-year-old daughter. Ms Maureen Atuhaire stated that she caught her husband, Clement Mugarura, twice in the act before the young victim herself bravely reported a third incident. The suspect allegedly warned the child against speaking out and subjected both his daughter and wife to severe domestic violence.

Following Ms Atuhaire’s report, Mugarura was arrested and is currently on remand at Kigo Prison. However, the grieving mother says her nightmare is far from over. She revealed that the incarcerated suspect has sent death threats against her for involving law enforcement. Compounding her distress, the landlord of the property where the family worked as caretakers has asked her to vacate, leaving her stranded without a home or financial stability.

Neighbours have corroborated claims of abuse, alleging that the suspect had previously harmed another relative’s child and frequently tortured his own daughter by tying her to trees and beating her. Local authorities, including Wakiso Assistant Resident District Commissioner Angel Namulimbe, have stepped in to assure the family of their safety and security.

Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire urged members of the public to report such heinous crimes immediately to enable swift police intervention. Police statistics highlight the gravity of the issue nationwide; the 2025 Uganda Police Force annual crime report recorded 10,492 defilement cases, a slight decrease from the 12,312 cases logged in 2024.
