Uganda Health Ministry Warns Public to Expect More Epidemics Amid Climate Shifts

Government health officials and scientists have issued a stark warning, advising the public to brace for an increase in emerging epidemics. Speaking in Kampala during the opening of the 20th Joint Annual Scientific Health (JASH) Conference and the 2nd National Annual Conference on Non-Communicable Diseases (NACNCD), authorities pointed to shifting environmental patterns and climate change as primary drivers.
Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, the Minister of Health, noted that Uganda’s unique geolocation leaves the nation exceptionally vulnerable. This vulnerability makes accurate epidemiological forecasting increasingly difficult for health experts trying to get ahead of potential outbreaks.
Alongside the threat of infectious diseases, officials highlighted a growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) as the local population ages. The dual challenge of managing infectious outbreaks while tackling chronic illnesses places significant strain on the national healthcare infrastructure.
Despite these mounting pressures, the ministry has maintained vigilance over recent health threats. Addressing past concerns, officials confirmed that Uganda remains entirely Ebola-free, with no confirmed cases recorded since the previous outbreak was officially declared over in July 2026.
Experts stress that heightened preparedness, improved surveillance, and a stronger focus on public health resilience will be critical in mitigating the impact of future health crises across the country.
