The Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development has highlighted encouraging progress resulting from Uganda’s National Cleaning Day. Observed on the final Saturday of each month, the initiative has driven noticeable improvements in environmental sanitation, overall public health, and the general tidiness of towns and trading centers nationwide.

In a communication dated October 28, 2026, Acting Permanent Secretary Alex Asiimwe praised local leaders for sustaining these monthly cleanup efforts. Reports gathered from Community Development Officers emphasize that collective civic action is directly translating into healthier communities and cleaner public spaces.

To build on these early successes, the Ministry has urged the Kampala Capital City Authority Executive Director, Chief Administrative Officers, and Town Clerks to step up leadership and community mobilization. Special emphasis is being placed on engaging women, youth, and vulnerable populations to ensure broad-based participation.

Under national guidelines set by the Office of the Prime Minister, the Ministry is tasked with driving behavioral change, integrating sanitation into community development programs, and ensuring occupational health and safety standards are met during cleaning operations. Local authorities have also been instructed to oversee Community Development Officers closely and submit regular progress reports.

Ultimately, the government hopes to embed environmental stewardship as a core national value, linking a widespread culture of cleanliness directly to Uganda’s broader development goals.
