A fresh political standoff has emerged in Masaka City following a high-profile clash between Resident City Commissioner (RCC) Ahamada Washaki and Mayor Florence Namayanja over the alleged misuse of public vehicles.
The tension erupted after Mr. Washaki ordered the impoundment of several government trucks and an excavator found collecting murram from the construction site of the new Masaka City headquarters. The RCC argued that Hanan Construction Company Ltd, the firm contracted for the project, was illegally utilizing government equipment and fuel instead of deploying its own machinery.
According to Mr. Washaki, the contractor was specifically allocated funds to handle the transportation of materials. He claimed the arrangement reeked of corruption and announced that he had already petitioned the State House Anti-Corruption Unit to investigate the city leadership, the city engineer, and the contractor.
Southern Regional Police Spokesman Twaha Kasirye confirmed that a general inquiry file has been opened and that key officials, including the mayor and city clerk, have been summoned to record statements regarding the matter.
However, Mayor Namayanja strongly defended the city’s actions, accusing the RCC of playing petty politics and intentionally sabotaging local service delivery. She explained that the trucks were deployed under an agreement to utilize excess murram from the site to urgently repair a feeder road in Ssenyange suburb that had been damaged by runoff water.
This confrontation adds to a growing list of disputes between Mr. Washaki and local leaders in the opposition-dominated municipality. Relations remain tense as investigations into the impounded equipment continue.
