Lira City authorities have intensified preparations for the upcoming National Cleaning Day, rallying schools, business owners, security agencies, and local residents to significantly improve sanitation standards across the urban center. The mobilization forms a crucial part of the city’s broader strategy to ready itself to host matches at the Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium during the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja is expected to grace the national exercise, joining local leaders and residents in hands-on cleaning activities. Lira City Town Clerk Geoffrey Bamanyisa noted that a dedicated task force has been coordinating pre-cleaning operations since Monday, targeting public spaces, commercial properties, and surrounding environments.

Authorities have stressed that the national cleaning event is not a public holiday meant for sleeping in. Instead, residents and business operators are urged to report to their premises between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. to clean their immediate surroundings before returning to normal daily activities. Every active business establishment, including banks and shops, must ensure representation equipped with brooms and protective gear.

Beyond the immediate goal of prepping for the continental tournament—which Uganda will co-host alongside Kenya and Tanzania—local leaders view the initiative as an opportunity to foster a long-term culture of cleanliness and prevent preventable sanitation-related diseases. City Environment Officer Leonard Otika highlighted that rising waste generation, currently estimated at around 70 tonnes, requires enhanced household waste management and greater community participation.

Security has also been heightened to ensure the safety of all participants during the nationwide exercise. Read the full story on Nile Post.
