The Ugandan government has reaffirmed its commitment to transforming healthcare services in the Sebei Sub-region following numerous complaints from residents regarding poor service delivery, drug stock-outs, and staff absenteeism.

During a recent visit to the region, Health Minister Dr Chris Baryomunsi announced plans to elevate Kapchorwa District Hospital to a regional referral hospital. Established in 1962, the 150-bed public facility serves a rapidly growing population of over 104,000 residents, alongside patients crossing the border from Kenya.

In addition to the hospital upgrade, Dr Baryomunsi commissioned a new maternity ward at Bukwo Hospital to enhance maternal healthcare delivery. He also revealed plans to elevate Kaproron Health Centre IV in Kween District to expand emergency care and inpatient services across Kapchorwa, Kween, and Bukwo districts.

Local leaders and residents welcomed the announced interventions, noting that the region has long struggled with administrative challenges. Residents previously raised concerns over extortion by medical workers who allegedly asked patients to purchase food items before receiving treatment, as well as chronic staff tardiness.

During the tour, State Minister for Primary Education Phyllis Chemutai praised health personnel for maintaining clean facilities and lauded Dr Baryomunsi for his historical legislative role in championing the ban on female genital mutilation in Uganda.

Meanwhile, local leaders also urged communities near the Kenyan border to remain vigilant and adhere to safety guidelines following reports of an Ebola case in neighbouring Kenya.
