General Caleb Akandwanaho, widely known as Gen Salim Saleh and coordinator of Operation Wealth Creation, has shared details regarding his recent hospital visit to veteran opposition figure Dr Kizza Besigye. Speaking to National Resistance Movement (NRM) parliamentary leaders and regional whips at his operational base in Kapeeka, Nakaseke District, the General stated that Besigye was in a severe health state when he stepped in to secure his transfer from prison to a medical facility.
Dr Besigye, a prominent four-time presidential candidate, had been on remand following his contentious arrest in Nairobi in November 2024. According to Gen Saleh, who is President Yoweri Museveni’s younger brother, his intervention came directly in response to a public appeal made via social media by his nephew, the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who suggested Saleh was uniquely positioned to handle the delicate situation.
The high-level briefing to NRM legislators has since sparked widespread speculation regarding broader political engagements and potential dialogue between the ruling government and opposition figures in Uganda. While details surrounding the nature of any prospective political talks remain scarce, Gen Saleh’s open acknowledgment of the visit underscores a notable shift in how the high-profile detention is being handled at the highest levels of the state.
Further updates on the discussions and Dr Besigye’s recovery are expected as political actors react to the unfolding developments. For more details, read the original report on Daily Monitor.
