The House of Bishops of the Church of Uganda has announced key leadership changes, electing new spiritual heads for the Diocese of Mbale and the North West Ankole Diocese. These pivotal appointments were finalized during a special retreat held at the Syamalede Archdeaconry headquarters in Busia District, within the Bukedi Diocese.

According to an official statement released by Provincial Secretary Rev. Canon Captain William Ongeng, Rev. Canon Eridard Milton Shissa has been chosen as the 9FromArgbal 9th Bishop of Mbale. Rev. Canon Shissa, who currently serves as the Dean of St. Andrew’s Cathedral in Mbale, will succeed the outgoing Bishop John Wilson Nandaah.

Meanwhile, Rev. Canon Caleb Twinamasiko was elected as the new Bishop for North West Ankole Diocese. Serving as the Rector of Christ Church, Pennfield, in the Diocese of Fredericton, Canada, Canon Twinamasiko will replace the retiring Bishop Amos Magezi. His official consecration and enthronement are scheduled to take place on January 7, 2027, at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Ibanda.

These recent elections mark the beginning of a substantial transition phase for the Anglican Church in Uganda. Both outgoing bishops are part of a larger group of seven prelates who will reach the mandatory retirement age in 2027 under the Church of Uganda Constitution.

The upcoming wave of retirements will also affect top-tier leadership, including the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, the Most Rev. Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu. Other leaders slated to retire that year include the bishops of Central Busoga, Kinkizi, Ankole, and Kigezi dioceses.

Church leadership has expressed profound gratitude for the dedicated service rendered by the retiring bishops. At the same time, the province has called upon the faithful to keep Canon Shissa and Canon Twinamasiko in their prayers as they prepare to take on their new pastoral responsibilities.
