The Archbishop of Kampala, the Most Rev. Paul Ssemogerere, has made a passionate appeal for collective action to eradicate human trafficking, warning that lasting peace remains impossible without deep respect for human dignity and freedom.
Speaking during the National Day of Prayer and Awareness of Human Trafficking in Uganda at the Sharing Youth Centre in Nsambya, Archbishop Ssemogerere highlighted that the vice continues to severely impact women and children. He noted that true peace extends far beyond the mere absence of war or the silencing of gunfire.
Many victims fall prey to deceptive promises of lucrative employment abroad, only to end up trapped in modern-day slavery and forced labor. The Archbishop emphasized that these victims are not mere statistics, but rather members of our families and communities longing for liberation.
Beyond cross-border crimes, the religious leader drew urgent attention to internal trafficking and child exploitation happening right on the streets of Kampala. He expressed deep concern over children forced into begging while adults collect the proceeds, calling the situation a collective shame for society.
Ssemogerere urged the government to strengthen child protection frameworks and provide robust safety nets for vulnerable minors. At the same time, he appealed to religious institutions, civil society, families, and individuals to join hands, reminding citizens that safeguarding human dignity is a shared responsibility.
